Real Guest Reviews!

There are a number of websites which publish reviews of accommodation. In the case of one popular site some establishments have reviews running to hundreds of wonderfully positive statements, while for others of similar size even adding positive and negative reports together they number only a few! Whatever this suggests, we can guarantee that all reviews that we receive are actually from guests!

Guests staying in guesthouses and B&B's across Edinburgh that have booked through a leading Accommodation site provide online feedback. This, unlike other sites, is driven by reservation numbers so is genuine feedback from real guests.

The reviews repeated below were all originally published elsewhere and received before our ongoing refurbishments!

Our city centre location, although walking distance from all main attractions, may not offer the most picturesque views from our windows. The thirty-five steps to our entrance up a 150 year old staircase may be of historical interest but not for the overly unfit. But our well-appointed, clean, and comfortable rooms, our friendly all-Scottish staff and a full Scottish cooked breakfast that shames many hotels is clearly an overall experience that our guests value.

A spectacular Christmas decoration hangs down the original Victorian 1820 Staircase. It's a listed building so there is no lift, and we cannot make alterations to the common stair, we will of course help with luggage but obviously the guest house is unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems

Excellent service, even better breakfast!

We knew the Valentine had a great location for our trip, right in the city centre; but the whole experience was a great surprise. They tour round a big map of Edinburgh after you arrive and issue a smaller version - this was invaluable.

The place was very clean, we stayed in a newly decorated room - good comfy bed - we slept well from all that walking round Edinburgh's sites.

The Scottish owner's were helpful with everything and made us feel at home. The outstanding thing though was the incredible breakfast - we are used to continenetal and the cooked breakfast we have had have always failed to impress us - until now - really really good portions and great taste - we skipped lunch twice!!

Value here is incredible - we paid under £100 for three nights, though they told us this was becvause it was a quiet month - we think it was worth double at least!

Many thanks to Vicky!!! We will be back.

A Wondeful Surprise - a fantastic place and hosts!

We booked into the Valentine after they had by far the lowest quote of anyone in the center of Edinburgh. This worried us a little, and the simple entrance into the building (quirky - the flights of steps are before the guesthouse, but we stayed on the second floor which you could do anywhere so it makes no difference!) made us thought we were at a budget setup. We were so wrong.

We were shown to our room, clean, warm, and tastefully decorated and with local paintings on the walls, multi-channel TV, and copious tea/coffee facilities that were filled to overflowing every day. We were offered a tour of the big map they have mounted in the hall and we gladly accepted - 20 minutes Vicky took explaining where all the sights were, the tour options and good local eateries - this level of help I have never experienced before.

Breakfast was individually cooked, a huge range of items including a very mild bit of haggis (spicy when I had it as a main one night), with nice touches like the eggs anyway you want them - different mornings I had poached, scrambled and fried - all perfect!! Can't think I've had a better breakfast anywhere. Decor in the breakfast room was modern with Edinburgh memorabilia and pictures added - very pleasant atmosphere.

Location, well nothing bar some expensive hotels seem to be spitting distance from the Castle, such is the layout of the place, its good they protect the old town though! When we turned the corner just seconds outside we saw the Castle loom ahead and above - ten minutes walk if you want, or longer if you dawdle past the old bookshops on the way! Perfect connection to buses to everywhere further out - we were impressed that a pound would take us on one bus from the guesthouse direct to Rosslyn Chapel and another to the Queen's Brittania.

All in all the perfect choice for us, incredible value and Edinburgh is a great City to visit!!

Nice Location...

Allegedly closest Guest House to Edinburgh Castle. However even though it was 10 minutes walk to the Castle this is actually the nearest Guest House.... its true but don't expect the Castle on your doorstep.

Nice owners who put us at ease. Room was small but cozy and excellent value. Clean and with TV. We had a room without en-suite but the shower and washroom was well maintained.

However it was up the top of a flight of stairs... probably not suitable for very old people.

Thank's for a great time!
We had a great time at the Valentine B&B in Edinburgh City Centre. I have been in Valentine`s 2 times and I enjoyed it very much. My boyfriend also liked it and we surely want to come back. Our room was very nice, the staff was great and we enjoyed the delicious breakfast, too. Thanks to all for the great time in Edinburgh!!

“Friendly welcome from wonderful people”
On arrival, you are given a very friendly welcome, shown where everything is on a big wall map and they make sure you are ready for your stay in Edinburgh. The staff at the Valentine City B&B gave us so much time when we had mix ups with a tour booking that we made before we came. After we had been told we had lost our money - they contacted the company and sorted everything for us on the phone, which took a long time, but then everything was OK. When it rained they gave us umbrella’s and suggested things to do that were ok in bad weather – they just seemed to care so much that we had a good time. The place is up a lot of steps in a 1830’s building with a story! But inside is very nice and very clean. Our own key meant we could come and go at anytime with no late night rule, but after a late night breakfast was really worth getting up for. We would stay here again and recommend to anyone else to do the same.

“Great Bed and Breakfast”
A stroll from Princes street, a short walk to the old town and the castle, this place certainly had the location! Very friendly scottish staff were an invaluable source of information about the city and their historical building - then each morning served a wonderful breakfast. Our room was en-suite, freshly decorated and comfortable with coffee making facilities and satellite TV in the room. As far as bed and breakfast goes, this place must be hard to beat, yet the price was well below some of the offers we had received. Edinburgh made a great break, the Valentine made it a fantastic break!!

“Top gasthof/pension in Edinburgh”
This accommodation made my trip very enjoyable. Very friendly, helpful people. Nice room with good bed, good shower and coffee in the room. Many TV channels. Easy to find, and walking only to Castle and close to other old parts of City. They looked after my bags while I used my last day after checkout. Very good service at breakfast.

“Best Breakfast, friendliest service - superb!”
I wanted the city centre and that's what I got! Ideal location, but its the breakfasts and the service that I will remember. This place was excellent value for money - I can't remember the last time I had such a good cooked breakfast - cooked to order. Vicky explained where everything was in the city centre, was always happy to answer questions about Edinburgh very fully - or phone her husband the one time I exceeded her extensive knowledge. He is a bit of a local expert, great if you want some in-depth history!! The room was newly decorated, bright and the en-suite everything it needed to be. Once issued with our key we could come and go as we pleased - not lock-up times and unlike some previous places we had stayed in the bed and breakfast category - we didnt have to 'get out' during the day if we wanted a long lie in after a night of partying as we had hotel style 'Do Not Disturb' signs for the door. A great stay, lovely people, lovely guest house.

“Very pleasant B&B in central Edinburgh”
Stayed here for four days during the festival. The owners were very friendly and helpful in suggesting what to see and do. Excellent location from which we were able to walk east to the university (through the Meadows), south towards Morningside or north to the Royal Mile all within 10-15 mins. Generally good decorative order and breakfast was decent. Would definitely go back.

Comment

The room was comfortable, the shower worked well, the hosts were friendly. The location was good, in that I walked everywhere, from the train station to the castle and along Princes Street. Also, it was a short walk to the museum and the main Mosque. I felt safe, even late at night. The food was good, but being vegetarian, the choices were limited.

Location

As mentioned above, I walked everywhere from the Valentine. The best view was from the observatory behind the Parliament Buildings. The museum supplied lots of information on the local history. The Royal Mile had many interesting stops and bits of history recorded on plaques.

Very good for the price. It appeared that improvements were on the way. Close to several bus lines, and rail station. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Clean rooms. Quiet rooms. Our room had a very nice room. Very nice breakfast.

Location

Easy walking distance to edinburgh city center. Easily within walking distance of Edinburgh castle. Bus line to Roslyn Chapel at the end of the block. Bus to airport only a couple blocks away. Many different types of restaurants with walking distance.

It was great having a bathroom in our room. The boys had bunk beds and we had the larger bed. Meals were outstanding. Hosts were always up for a good story about the area and the free internet was a huge bonus for getting trip details finalized... and the kids loved it too! Location of this guest house is perfect. We literally walked everywhere. THere was so much going on while we were there for the festival. With the exchange to CDN $ we were paying $300/night CDN. Rather steep for what we were getting but we also had to take into account that the festival was on.

Location

Go to the Pitch n' Putt over in Bruntsfield. You can rent a putter at the pub for cheap. Make sure you stop at Ye Olde Golf Pub for a meal too... great food. The Royal Mile and Princes Street are a nice walk away. During the festival you can hear the cannon from the Edinburgh Castle as if it's right next door.
